Winter clothing for neighbors in need

A warm hat, a pair of gloves or a scarf can be a modest gift with an immediate purpose. In March 2018, the Gramercy Park Block Association reported donations of those items to the Brotherhood Synagogue’s men’s shelter, with thanks to neighbors who had helped.

The Block Association’s wider program record describes support for the shelter and clothing collections for its guests. The synagogue operates the shelter; the Block Association helps mobilize neighborhood support.

The Block Association has also supported the New York Cares Coat Drive, connecting residents’ offers of new or gently used coats with a broader citywide effort. These collections complement the Block Association’s year-round support for homebound neighbors.

The individual drives are part of a larger habit: noticing a need, working with an established organization and making it straightforward for neighbors to contribute.
