The history of Neighbors Helping Neighbors

A relationship before a collection

A request for school supplies. A pantry running short. A holiday meal that needs volunteers. Across the Gramercy Park Block Association’s records, Neighbors Helping Neighbors connects the people able to help with organizations that know where help is needed.

The projects differ in size and purpose, but many recur over years. Their history is one of relationships with schools, cultural institutions, shelters, supportive housing and local businesses—and neighbors willing to give time, goods or money.

Thanksgiving meals for neighbors and responders

At Kenmore Hall, support continued long after the campaign and rehabilitation that first brought the Block Association into the building’s story. Pantry drives, household supplies and holiday meals became recurring ways to take part. Later letters recorded support for veterans, including the luncheon photographs shared in November 2024.

Elsewhere, neighbors helped serve Thanksgiving meals and supported St. George’s Common Table. These accounts place practical hospitality at the center of community service.

Opening doors for young people

Through Project LIFT, the neighborhood supported dance scholarships alongside clothing, school supplies and other needs. The 2022 LIFT account follows former students into adult careers and records help with laptops when teaching moved online during the pandemic.

Book and backpack drives connected residents with children through several organizations. A December 2014 report named Project LIFT, Adopt a Family partners, Nazareth Housing, Mt. Sinai–Beth Israel pediatrics and Escuela Hispana Montessori among the recipients of books, educational supplies, clothing and toys.

Children contributed, too

The service record includes children sorting donated books, preparing gifts and taking part in neighborhood projects. Kids Helping Kids gave young volunteers a part in the response after September 11. The 2022 St. Gaudens Playground cleanup brought families and a professional cleaning team together around a shared place.

Generosity travels through local connections

The holiday toy drive with Paddy Maguire’s Ale House made a neighborhood business a gathering point for giving. Donations to Nazareth Housing supplied clothing, furniture, baby items and books; its January 2014 thank-you opened a conversation about future projects.

The Block Association’s December 2024 service letter again brought several relationships together: LIFT, Kenmore Hall, school-supply support with local police and Thanksgiving meals for Emergency Service officers. The continued appearance of these partners shows how giving developed into a network.
