Preparing the Park for winter and spring

The Trustees’ November 2016 and 2017 updates described planting roughly 30,000 bulbs, including tulips, daffodils, alliums, crocuses and grape hyacinths. Spring’s display began with autumn work.

The reports described leaf collection, fertilizer and mulch, and shutting down the Park’s irrigation system to protect the pipes from freezing. The 2016 account also explained that separate water lines allowed sidewalk washing to continue after the irrigation shutdown.

Park caretaker Amando Flores was pictured preparing the landscape for winter. These accounts put the seasonal flowers in context: planting is part of a longer routine of clearing, protecting and tending the grounds.

Another season measured in bulbs

The December 2025 year-end graphic reported 30,000 tulip bulbs planted. The figure adds a later seasonal snapshot to the earlier Trustees’ accounts of preparing the garden for spring.

The earlier totals include several bulb varieties; the 2025 figure counts tulips.
