2006

Ministry, preservation and the Park

In May 2006, Town & Village reported Tom Pike’s election as a Trustee of Gramercy Park. Its profile traced his neighborhood work back to his arrival at Calvary in 1971 and described his interest in preserving the Park and the surrounding historic district.

The earlier joint election report also identified Pike as an active member of the Gramercy Park Block Association’s advisory board. The articles place the later honors and birthday gathering within a longer record of local ministry and civic service.

2008

Marking thirty-seven years of ministry

A July 2, 2008 letter recalled the June 29 service marking Tom Pike’s retirement after thirty-seven years as rector of Calvary–St. George’s. A reception at The Players followed.

2009

A Landmarks Lion in Gramercy

The neighborhood events archive records a gathering at The Players on October 28, 2009, honoring Tom Pike with the Historic Districts Council’s Landmarks Lion award. Hundreds attended, according to the contemporary account. The occasion recognized the preservation work that also formed part of his life in Gramercy.

In her remarks at the award presentation, Arlene Harrison connected Pike’s preservation work with his practical help to neighbors. She recalled the parish house serving as a supply depot after September 11, and the ongoing work on Calvary’s façade and windows. She also spoke of the Park fence restoration, which was nearing its final stages in 2009 as the neighborhood honored his preservation work.

Fifty years of ministry

In January 2013, nearly three hundred people gathered at St. George’s to celebrate the Rev. Dr. Thomas F. Pike’s fifty years in the priesthood. The Block Association helped organize the occasion.

Preservation as community memory

The published account emphasized Pike’s belief that historic buildings carry the memory of people and events. It recalled his seventeen years on the Landmarks Preservation Commission and his work at Calvary Church, including restoration of stained-glass windows.

A place to help from

The celebration also recognized the parish’s practical role in relief efforts after September 11, Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy. Parish space became a place to gather donated supplies.

2018

Eighty years, and a neighborhood’s thanks

Neighbors celebrated Tom Pike’s eightieth birthday at the Calvary–St. George’s Parish House on January 10, 2018. The Block Association shared a video tribute, photographs and Arlene Harrison’s remarks the following day.

The newsletter identified Pike as both a Trustee of Gramercy Park and the Block Association’s archivist.

2020

Recalling work for civil rights

A January 2020 newsletter revisited a filmed conversation with Pike first published in January 2018. The Block Association’s introduction described his involvement in the civil-rights movement and work with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s.

Before his years at Calvary, Pike’s ministry had taken him into the civil-rights movement of the 1960s.
