An October 28, 2013 Trustees report described replacing two large street trees lost during Hurricane Sandy on the southeast sidewalk outside the Park. Bartlett Tree Experts planted two Callery pears to match the trees at either end of the group.
The neighboring trees had themselves been planted after Hurricane Irene in 2011. The report explained that the replacement trees needed to be as close in size as possible to those survivors, while still fitting their root balls into the available tree pits.
A third tree on the southwest sidewalk had also been lost during Sandy. An appropriate replacement was still being sought when the letter was published.
Later replacement planting in 2022–2024 continued the Gramercy Park Block Association’s street-tree work.
Care after the planting
A replacement tree changes with every season. Today’s street-tree records help neighbors look more closely at the canopy around the Park, while the care program follows its needs over time.
