In May 2009, P.S. 40 was honored at New Yorkers for Parks’ Daffodil Project Benefit Breakfast. Principal Susan Felder accepted the award for the students and staff and thanked the Gramercy Park Block Association for its support. The report also recognized gardener Christy Daily, who had worked with the students, and recalled several years of planting together.
A November 12, 2009 report described P.S. 40 classes planting thousands of daffodil bulbs in Stuyvesant Park. Teachers and parent volunteers accompanied the students, who first heard from gardener Gosha Mosiej before receiving gloves, shovels and bulbs.
New Yorkers for Parks supplied the bulbs; the Block Association provided planting equipment. The project involved the school and the Parks Department, with relationships helped along by David Loo and Danny Meyer. The Block Association’s board member Jan Renner served as the school liaison.
The planting was part of a P.S. 40 partnership that also supported music and the arts. Children could return to the public park in spring to see the daffodils.
