2008

Repairing damage on Gramercy Park East

An August 8 Park update confirmed that bluestone damaged when a car went through the east fence had been replaced and that the fence itself had been repaired. Repairing the base beneath the fence was still the next step.

2009

The curb, gates and winter water

A March 16 update recorded the next phase of brownstone curb restoration beginning beneath the fence. The plan called for cleaning approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission, followed by attention to deteriorated joints. It was a progress report; later stages were still ahead.

Smaller completed improvements appeared in the same letter. New bronze reminders to close the gates had been designed with a preservationist to fit the historic ironwork. A water line installed that January made water available for winter sidewalk cleaning and contractors’ work; an iron access door had also been fitted over the water pit.

A careful restoration

A 2013 Trustees newsletter recalled the restoration of Gramercy Park’s fence, gates and surrounding brownstone curbing, completed in 2009. The Trustees worked with Gabriel Popian’s conservation firm on a project described as painstaking and closely monitored by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

The account placed this work within a longer relationship with the firm beginning in 2006. It also described plans for future work on Park monuments.

2012

A security installation begins

An August 2012 Trustees notice recorded the start of a video system serving the Park and its perimeter following vandalism and neighborhood crime. Its photographs showed trenches being prepared for buried cabling.

Repair after damage

After a taxi struck the north fence in June 2012, the Trustees arranged a historically sensitive repair. A July 2014 update described the work and new cobblestone thresholds at the north and south gates.

The repair was the Trustees’ responsibility, with the metalwork specialist identified in the newsletter. The Gramercy Park Block Association helped share the news with the surrounding community.

August 2014

The fence repair was complete

The August 4 follow-up confirmed completion of the north-fence restoration after the June 2012 taxi crash. It also explained that the Trustees had spent time in court seeking compensation for the repair.

2015

Improvements to the Park shed

A September 1, 2015 newsletter showed work on the Trustees’ timber shed in the Park.

2017

Returning to the north gate

In March 2017, Gabriel Popian returned to repair the north gate. His firm had worked with the Trustees since 2006, including on the fence restoration completed in 2009.

2020

Replacing damaged decorative elements

October 2020 letters recorded G&L Popian replacing badly damaged gate decorations and other metalwork. The south and east gates had been primed and painted black; the north and west gates were primed, with finishing coats still scheduled.

Progress photographs showed damaged elements, replacement units and the application of protective coatings.

2020

A year-end record of bench restoration

The Block Association’s December 29, 2020 “By the Numbers” newsletter reported 45 Park benches fully restored. The graphic recorded this alongside planting and perimeter-lighting work, showing how the year’s efforts extended from the landscape to the places where people sit.

2026

Restoring the gates in rotation

An April 7, 2026 Trustees update described a program to take each of the Park’s four gates off-site for professional restoration, one at a time. It confirmed that work on the west gate was complete and that the gate had been returned.

The east gate had then been removed for its turn.

June 2026

Both gates return to use

The June 4 seasonal letter supplied the follow-up to the April restoration update: the East and West gates had been restored. The same account reported the Ruggles Fountain back in working order and described repairs and painting for benches, along with work on the gardener’s cottage.

The Park and its surrounding streets

The Trustees maintain the Park’s landscape, fence and gates. The Block Association’s Clean Streets & Streetscape and tree-care programs cover the public streets around it.
