Seeing government at work

A June 1, 1995 Town & Village report follows the 13th Precinct Explorers on a trip to Washington, D.C. Detective Owen Hughes conceived the visit; he credited Arlene Harrison and the Gramercy Park Block Association’s members with helping make it happen.

The group met Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, toured the Capitol with her staff and watched the House of Representatives vote from the visitors’ gallery. Their itinerary also included the National Law Enforcement Memorial, the Air and Space Museum and the FBI. Hughes and Officer Anthony Makowski accompanied the young people.

Helping with uniforms

A photograph published on December 18, 2003 records Harrison presenting a donation of new uniforms at a Christmas party jointly sponsored by the Block Association and the 13th Precinct. The practical support continued beyond a single outing.

A July 2018 newsletter records the Block Association’s support for the Law Enforcement Explorers program, which introduced young people from different communities to careers in law enforcement and the criminal justice system.

The issue includes photographs of Explorers in new shirts supplied by the Block Association, pictured with Arlene Harrison. It describes the Block Association’s support as a relationship developed over years.
