On March 4, 2005, children and families gathered at Florence Gould Hall for a benefit featuring the premiere of Keith Michael’s hour-long ballet Mother GOOSE! The Gramercy Park Block Association helped organize the event for New York Theatre Ballet and its LIFT Community Service Program.

Before the performance, children met nursery-rhyme characters, listened to stories, played games and took dance lessons. The occasion made participation part of the afternoon, alongside watching the ballet.

Artistic director Diana Byer explained that the proceeds would benefit LIFT’s ballet classes, scholarships, tutoring, mentoring and other support for children living in shelters or facing difficult circumstances.

The report identified Arlene Harrison and Gramercy neighbor Gretchen Teran as members of NYTB’s board. Harrison also thanked young neighborhood helpers for their part in the event. It was one way the community’s relationship with the company connected a cultural outing with educational support.
