Town & Village’s December 1, 2005 report described a second phase of the Gramercy Park Block Association’s Neighbors Helping Neighbors Katrina relief effort, supported by the Rev. Tom Pike and Calvary–St. George’s. After collecting and sending emergency goods, the neighborhood turned to the needs of families rebuilding their lives.
The article reported a $2,500 contribution toward furnishing homes through the relief initiative associated with Oprah Winfrey and Habitat for Humanity. Donations had come from the Gramercy and Stuyvesant Town–Peter Cooper Village communities.
The same report recalled hundreds of boxes of clothing and household goods packed by volunteers and delivered to churches serving affected areas in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The two phases show needs changing over time—and a neighborhood adapting its help accordingly.
