Alongside meals and holiday gatherings, the Gramercy Park Block Association’s newsletters recorded milestones for officers in the NYPD Emergency Service Unit. An August 2016 issue recognized the retirements of Detective Kevin Keuchler and Lieutenant Larry Serras.
In December 2017, the newsletter shared coverage of Jimmy Moran’s November 30 retirement walkout after thirty-seven years of service. The record placed an individual career within the Block Association’s longstanding relationship with first responders.
2023: honoring Assistant Chief Gin Yee
The Block Association’s August 2023 summer report described an event honoring Assistant Chief Gin Yee on his retirement. The account returned to his leadership during September 11 and to the months when neighborhood volunteers supported Emergency Service Truck 1 officers returning from recovery shifts.
The tribute placed a retirement within a relationship built over decades. It was another occasion for neighbors to recognize the people behind the public service they had come to know.
