A street sign does two jobs: it tells you where you are and, sometimes, why the place matters. Around Gramercy, the historic-district name brings that second story into view at the corner.
The Gramercy Park Block Association welcomed the new signs in April 2014. Smaller lettering and the addition of “Gramercy Park Historic District” gave a practical fixture a closer connection with its setting.
The previous summer, the Block Association had described its Neighborhood Preservation, Environmental and Greening Program. That seasonal effort linked the upkeep of everyday surroundings with the larger task of caring for the neighborhood.
Today’s Clean Streets & Streetscape work and historic-preservation advocacy continue to address those different scales of care: the daily condition of the street and the enduring character of the blocks.
