In February 2022, the Gramercy Park Block Association urged the neighborhood to register its interest in curbside composting. Community Board 6 had been approved for service, the Block Association explained, but the rollout depended on sanitation routes and the concentration of eligible sign-ups.
The Block Association used its neighborhood letters to connect an environmental goal with a practical local action: demonstrating demand on the blocks around the Park.
The letter encouraged people in apartment buildings to speak with their managers and boards, because participation by a multi-unit building needed management approval. Individual expressions of interest also helped show the demand for service.
The Block Association described this as an effort it was spearheading. The Department of Sanitation was responsible for collection and the rollout decisions; the newsletter did not claim the Block Association had already secured a start date.
