Across spring and summer 2013, the Gramercy Park Block Association circulated NYPD crime-prevention information about problems residents might encounter at home, while shopping or while using a bank machine. These short notices formed a recurring part of the Block Association’s communications.
A June bulletin described deception burglaries, in which someone claiming to be a utility or repair worker sought entry to a home. An August notice concerned unattended bags in shopping carts. The Block Association’s role was to bring police information to an audience already connected through neighborhood news.
Other notices covered ATM shoulder surfing and skimming. An August bulletin described a cellphone-recovery example supplied by the NYPD, explaining how a tracking feature had helped officers recover stolen property.
