Music in the streets
The neighborhood events archive traces annual spring concerts and later Make Music New York programs hosted with Calvary–St. George’s. Outdoor performances made room for children, parishioners, residents and passersby, linking the Park blocks to the institutions around them.
Gatherings with a purpose
National Night Out, holiday toy drives, caroling and members’ gatherings appear throughout the Gramercy Park Block Association’s event record.
2002
Recognizing a neighbor’s contribution
The Block Association presented its first Woman of the Year award to attorney Susan J. Sutherland at Eleven Madison Park, according to the October 2002 events record. The award belongs to the history of neighbors gathering to recognize service to their community.
2006
Marking 175 years of Gramercy Park
The events archive records the Block Association beginning a series of gatherings marking the Park’s 175th anniversary in 2006. The anniversary looked back to Samuel B. Ruggles’s founding vision in 1831 and connected the neighborhood’s shared occasions with its longer history.
2009
A benefit at Maialino
On November 4, 2009, hundreds of Gramercy residents gathered at a preview of Danny Meyer’s Maialino in the Gramercy Park Hotel for a fundraiser supporting the Block Association. The contemporary account preserves a local business opening its doors to the neighborhood and the Block Association’s work.
2013
A renewed welcome at the National Arts Club
An April 2013 account described the Block Association’s return to the National Arts Club for a neighborhood gathering. Arlene Harrison co-hosted with club president Dianne Bernhard; Tom Pike and preservationist Eugene Weise led tours and spoke about the Tilden Mansion. The report welcomed a renewed relationship between the club and its neighbors.
2024
Looking up together
The April 9 newsletter shared neighbors’ photographs of the previous day’s solar eclipse. People in the Park looked skyward through eclipse glasses, and the images preserved a moment of shared curiosity.
