The Block Association’s public-safety work rests on a simple idea: neighbors are better supported when they are organized, informed and connected to the people responsible for responding. The Block Association works closely with the NYPD’s 13th Precinct and Emergency Service Truck 1.
In its August letter, the Block Association described its role as a Community Partner of the precinct’s Neighborhood Coordination Officers. These officers provide an everyday link between residents, building staff and the police. The Block Association helps a concern reach the appropriate officer or agency, and helps important information travel back to the neighborhood.
When residents reported problems with outgoing mail in neighborhood collection boxes in July, the Block Association contacted the precinct’s Crime Prevention Officers and circulated an alert. That sequence—listen, contact the people responsible, and report back—is at the heart of the work.
Not every concern begins with an emergency. A recurring condition on a block or a problem that has not been resolved can also benefit from clear documentation and a reliable line of communication.
The relationship also includes the Remembrance Garden at the 13th Precinct, National Night Out and support for young people in the Law Enforcement Explorers program. These activities connect the neighborhood’s daily life with the people who serve it.
The Block Association helps neighbors reach the appropriate officers and agencies, advocates for attention and keeps the community informed.
