Today, Mike Boag of Boag Nurseries and his landscaping crew are in the Park for their annual end of summer clean-up.
Since at different times during the clean-up there will be trucks, equipment, dust, and spraying for insects, for your health and safety, the Park will be closed today (Thurs 8/29) at 2pm until tomorrow (Fri 8/30) at 7am.
The crew is pruning all the trees, shrubs, and perennials. This will allow more sunlight to come in and will encourage new growth and more flowers in the Spring. They are removing all the debris in the beds along the Park perimeter, where people throw papers, bottles, cans, nuts, seeds, and bread from outside the Park. They are also cleaning, edging, weeding, and manicuring the beds, giving them a defined shape.
The Boag crew will also be conducting their semi-annual spraying of the Park for insects. This summer it is particularly important since we have recently had a greatly increased number of complaints about mosquitoes in the Park and in the buildings surrounding the Park.
In two weeks, the Boag crew will return for additional weed and debris removal, and to aerate and seed the lawn. They will also edge and mulch the beds, and fertilize the shrubs and trees with organic fertilizer. Adding mulch will help keep the weeds down and will protect the plants and trees by insulating them as they go dormant over the Winter. The fertilizer will give our plants a lush green look and strengthen their root systems, thus enabling them to better survive the Winter.
